The EPL kicks off on August 21, 2026. That’s just 33 days after the World Cup final. For players who went deep in the tournament, a mandated three-week break means they could have as few as 12 days to train with their clubs before competitive matches begin.
The numbers behind the squeeze
Premier League clubs contributed 154 players to national teams at the World Cup. Those players accounted for roughly 25.6% of all goals scored at the tournament, netting 79 of the 308 total goals.
Arsenal and Manchester City sent the most players into the tournament’s later rounds, meaning their squads face the tightest turnaround. Tottenham also had four players involved in deep runs, adding another title-adjacent club to the list of those scrambling to piece together match fitness in record time.
Players returning late essentially parachute into a pre-season that’s already half over.
Injury concerns add fuel to the fire
Arsenal’s William Saliba picked up a back issue during the tournament, casting doubt over his availability for the opening weeks.
Aston Villa suffered perhaps the most devastating blow. Amadou Onana sustained an ACL tear. ACL recoveries typically range from six to nine months, which could sideline Onana well into 2027.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are managing the return of Rodri, who has been recovering from back surgery.
A condensed calendar with no margin for error
FIFA’s expanded 48-team format for 2026 meant more matches, more travel across three countries spanning multiple time zones, and more wear on players who were already carrying heavy workloads from a grueling domestic season.
A player who features in the World Cup final on July 19 gets his mandated break, returns to training around August 9, and then has less than two weeks before the Premier League opener. Compare that to teammates who weren’t called up internationally. Those players may have had six or seven weeks of structured preparation, tactical drilling, and fitness building.
What it means for the title race
The betting markets have already installed Arsenal and Manchester City as the leading title contenders for 2025-26. In a league where the title has been decided by single-digit point margins in recent seasons, September results matter more than people think.
