Xaman, the self-custodial wallet formerly known as Xumm, has grown fast enough to cause an actual infrastructure headache for the XRP Ledger. A fix is reportedly in the works to address the strain that the wallet’s rising account numbers are placing on XRPL node capacity.
What’s happening with Xaman and the XRPL
Xaman is built by XRPL Labs and serves as the primary self-custodial mobile gateway to the XRP Ledger and Xahau networks. It lets users create and manage XRPL accounts, execute transactions, set up trust lines, trade on the ledger’s built-in decentralized exchange, and interact with NFTs.
The wallet keeps private keys stored entirely on-device, meaning users maintain full custody of their funds at all times.
Growth has been substantial. An annual review snapshot showed roughly 735,000 active users, reflecting a 45.8% increase over the prior period. Separate 2024 metrics pegged the active user count above 600,000, with the platform logging hundreds of millions of in-app interactions across its lifespan.
Each new Xaman account requires activation on the ledger itself, with a base reserve of 1 XRP needed to maintain an account.
The issue at hand is that this volume of accounts is now bumping up against what some XRPL nodes can efficiently handle. The fix being prepared targets this capacity constraint directly, aiming to ensure that the network’s infrastructure keeps pace with its most popular wallet’s user base.
Why node capacity matters
The XRPL has a governance mechanism for protocol changes called the amendment process. Amendments are proposed upgrades that require supermajority consensus among validators before activation.
One amendment currently making its way through the process is BatchV1_1, which is anticipated to potentially activate by late September 2026. However, that particular amendment addresses a separate issue, a flaw identified before the mainnet originally launched, and is unrelated to the account volume or node capacity concerns surfaced by Xaman’s growth.
The fix being referenced for the Xaman-adjacent capacity issue appears to be a more targeted response, potentially outside the formal amendment process or running on a faster timeline.
Xaman’s role in the broader XRPL ecosystem
Xaman doesn’t just store XRP. It serves as a signing interface for decentralized applications, a trust line manager, and a trading terminal for the XRPL’s native DEX. The hundreds of millions of interactions logged through the platform reflect a user base that’s active, not just registered.
