Youri Tielemans is wearing the captain’s armband for Manchester United tonight, a development that would have seemed far-fetched just a few months ago. The Belgian midfielder only arrived at Old Trafford in July, and he’s already being trusted with the leadership responsibilities typically reserved for longer-tenured players.
From Aston Villa to Old Trafford
Tielemans completed his move to Manchester United on July 14, 2026, after Aston Villa’s £35 million release clause was activated. He signed a five-year deal running through 2031 and took the number 18 shirt.
United had been linked with the 29-year-old as far back as 2019, and again in 2022, but neither move materialized.
His final season at Villa Park was a productive one: 2 goals and 7 assists across 35 appearances during the 2025/26 campaign, a stretch that also included helping Villa lift the Europa League trophy.
At international level, Tielemans brought more than 90 caps worth of experience and the distinction of having captained Belgium during their quarter-final run at the 2026 World Cup.
A midfield recalibrated
Since joining, Tielemans has slotted into Carrick’s midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo and new recruit Andrey Santos.
United’s start to the league season reads one win, one draw, and two losses from their opening four matches. A loss in the Manchester derby preceded their preparation for the EFL Cup third round fixture against Brighton on September 16. Tielemans registered an assist in United’s Champions League victory over Sabah FK on September 10.
The captaincy question
The armband tonight raises an interesting subplot. Bruno Fernandes has been the player most commonly associated with the United captaincy in recent seasons, so Tielemans wearing it suggests either rotation, Fernandes’ absence from the starting lineup, or a deliberate tactical choice by Carrick.
Tonight’s fixture against Brighton in the EFL Cup third round on September 16 follows a mixed opening four league games in which United have managed just one win.
