Three English clubs are simultaneously threatening to smash a record that has stood since Monaco shipped Kylian Mbappé to Paris Saint-Germain. Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle United have each generated north of €275 million in player sales this summer, putting AS Monaco’s single-window record of €360 million squarely in their crosshairs.
With the transfer window still open, all three could surpass that benchmark before the deadline.
The numbers behind the spending spree in reverse
Aston Villa leads the charge at approximately €293 million in departures. The headline move: Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for €138 million, a club-record sale. Ezri Konsa followed him out the door, joining Arsenal for €59.6 million, while Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United for €41 million.
Manchester City sits at around €279 million, the product of a broader squad overhaul. Further departures are anticipated, meaning City could leapfrog Villa before the window shuts.
Newcastle United rounds out the trio at about €276 million. Their marquee exit was Sandro Tonali’s €108 million transfer to Tottenham. Bruno Guimarães went to Arsenal for €87.5 million, and Anthony Gordon left for Barcelona at €80 million.
Why Monaco’s record is the benchmark
Monaco set the bar at €360 million during the 2018/19 window. Mbappé’s €180 million move to PSG accounted for half the total.
England’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, or PSR, cap the amount clubs can lose over a rolling three-year period. Clubs that breach the threshold face points deductions, a punishment Everton and Nottingham Forest have already experienced in recent seasons. Selling players at a profit is the cleanest way to stay on the right side of the ledger.
