Austin Federa knows Solana’s story better than most. As the former Head of Strategy at the Solana Foundation, he watched the network weather one of crypto’s most dramatic near-death experiences when FTX imploded in November 2022. Solana didn’t just survive. It kept building.
The comfort trap
During a CoinDesk panel discussion in February 2026, Federa didn’t mince words about where the real danger lies for established blockchain networks.
“The worst thing you can feel in blockchain is comfortable.”
Federa’s concern centers on the growing field of high-performance blockchain solutions that are competing for the same users, developers, and institutional capital that Solana has been courting. He left the Foundation to co-found DoubleZero in 2024, a project focused on high-performance networking and low-latency data delivery, largely serving the Solana ecosystem itself.
The FTX survival story, and why it matters now
When FTX and its affiliated trading firm Alameda Research went bankrupt in November 2022, Solana was widely expected to suffer catastrophic consequences. What actually happened was more interesting. Solana retained all of its major technical teams after the collapse, allowing it to continue shipping upgrades, growing its DeFi ecosystem, and attracting new projects while the broader market was still processing the FTX fallout.
DoubleZero and the infrastructure gap
In 2026, DoubleZero’s initiatives focus on two areas: validator geographic concentration and transaction ordering predictability. DoubleZero is working on Edge services designed to decentralize validator distribution and enhance on-chain data delivery.
What this means for investors
Solana’s Breakpoint 2026 conference, scheduled for November 15-17 in London, will likely serve as a proving ground for whether the ecosystem is taking Federa’s warnings seriously. The event’s emphasis on institutional adoption and technical upgrades suggests the community recognizes that the next phase of growth requires different tools than the last one.
