Bayern Munich denies interest in signing Jules Koundé, but the transfer market tells a different story

3 hours ago 15

Bayern Munich wants everyone to know they are absolutely, definitely not negotiating to sign Barcelona defender Jules Koundé.

The Bavarian club has publicly shot down reports linking them to the French international, even as multiple sources confirm that Koundé has sat on Bayern’s shortlist for years.

What Bayern is actually saying

According to journalist Christian Falk, a well-connected Bayern reporter, the club “likes the player and have followed his progress.” They’ve scouted him extensively. They’re just not talking to anyone about actually buying him at this particular moment in time.

The math problem blocking any deal

Even if Bayern’s interest is genuine, there’s a practical obstacle that makes any near-term move unlikely. Bayern’s defensive roster is overcrowded.

Before adding anyone new, Bayern would need to move players out, with Sacha Boey reportedly among those who could be sold to create both roster space and financial flexibility.

Then there’s the price tag. Barcelona are believed to want more than £50 million for Koundé. His wages reportedly exceed £200K per week.

A crowded market for Koundé’s signature

Bayern isn’t operating in a vacuum here. Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal have all been linked to the 26-year-old French defender.

Premier League TV money means Chelsea or Arsenal could absorb Koundé’s £200K-plus weekly wages without the same level of internal debate that Bayern would require. That wage structure is more standard in the Premier League than in the Bundesliga.

For Barcelona’s part, Barcelona’s well-documented financial challenges mean no player is truly untouchable if the right offer arrives.

What this means for the transfer window

Bayern’s denial is technically accurate but strategically incomplete. They aren’t negotiating today. If Boey or another defensive player gets sold, the Koundé conversation will almost certainly resurface with more urgency.
