Canada made history on June 12 by hosting its first-ever men’s FIFA World Cup opening ceremony at BMO Field in Toronto. The event placed Indigenous cultures and the country’s multicultural identity at the center of a global stage watched by millions.

The ceremony kicked off at 1:30 p.m. local time, roughly 90 minutes before Canada took on Bosnia and Herzegovina in a Group B match. Canadian Indigenous artist William Prince opened the proceedings with a spoken-word performance that framed Indigenous communities as foundational to the national story being told that afternoon.

A mosaic on the world’s biggest stage

The artistic concept behind the ceremony leaned into a mosaic theme. A reimagined version of the FIFA World Cup Trophy, designed with mosaic-inspired elements, served as the visual centerpiece, symbolizing the layered cultural fabric of a country that often defines itself through diversity rather than uniformity.

Balich Wonder Studio, the production company behind the ceremony’s artistic direction, crafted the experience to weave together performances from a roster of distinctly Canadian voices. Jessie Reyez, Elyanna, and Michael Buble all performed. Alanis Morissette closed the show with a rendition of “O, Canada.”

The Toronto ceremony was one of three across the co-hosting nations. Mexico City held its own opening event the day before, on June 11, and Los Angeles staged its ceremony on the same day as Toronto’s. The format reflected the sprawling, continent-wide nature of the 2026 World Cup, which marks the first time the men’s tournament has been split across three host nations.
