Cursor, the company that made its name building one of the most popular AI-powered code editors on the planet, is no longer content just writing your code. It wants to write your emails too.
The company is developing a general-purpose AI agent internally called Sand, designed to handle everyday office tasks like managing emails, texts, and spreadsheets. The project, first reported by The Information on July 9, 2026, represents a significant strategic pivot for a company that has built its entire reputation on making developers more productive.
From code completion to inbox zero
The agent is being positioned as a personalized assistant capable of managing spreadsheets, handling email correspondence, and processing text messages. Internal rollout of Sand began in late June 2026, meaning Cursor employees are already dogfooding the product. No public release date has been confirmed.
The competitive landscape is getting crowded fast
Sand’s most direct competitor appears to be Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, which has been carving out its own space in the agentic productivity market. Anthropic built Claude as a general-purpose AI model first, then layered productivity features on top. Cursor is coming from the opposite direction, starting with deep expertise in one vertical and expanding outward.
Acquisition rumors add another layer
Cursor’s expansion comes at an interesting time. Reports have surfaced about potential acquisition interest from SpaceXAI, though the specifics and seriousness of those discussions remain unclear.
