Saudi Arabia’s grand vision of becoming the global capital of competitive gaming just hit another wall. The Esports Foundation announced on August 18 that the inaugural Esports Nations Cup, originally slated for November 2026 in Riyadh, has been pushed back a full year to November 2027 due to the ongoing Iran conflict.
The postponement comes despite qualifiers for most of the tournament’s 16 planned titles being largely complete. Teams from North America, Europe, MENA, and Asia had already battled through regional events and ranking systems to secure their spots.
A pattern of displacement
The ENC isn’t the only major esports event running from Riyadh. The 2026 Esports World Cup, which carries a $75 million prize pool, has already been relocated from the Saudi capital to Paris over the same regional safety concerns.
The Esports Foundation framed its decision around “continued assessment of safety and logistical considerations.” The ENC was designed as a national team competition across games like Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, Valorant, and Apex Legends. A $20 million prize pool was earmarked for the inaugural edition.
Saudi Arabia’s esports gamble gets tested
The qualification structure for the ENC drew from multiple pathways, including rankings, regional competitions, and wildcard entries across four major territories.
The Esports Foundation didn’t cancel the event. It didn’t strip Riyadh of hosting rights permanently. The postponement to 2027 reads as a bet that the geopolitical situation will improve within 12 months.
What this means for competitive gaming
The fact that qualifiers were nearly complete before the plug was pulled suggests robust infrastructure underneath the event. The failure point wasn’t organizational. It was geographic.
For players and teams who spent months grinding through qualification rounds, the delay creates an awkward limbo. The Esports Foundation hasn’t addressed whether qualification results will carry over or whether fresh qualifiers will be required.
