OpenAI releases ChatGPT for Teens to promote safe usage and learning

1 hour ago 23

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated version of its flagship AI chatbot built specifically for users aged 13 to 17. The rollout, which went live globally on August 18, 2026, represents the company’s most significant move yet to address the increasingly complicated question of how young people should interact with generative AI.

According to OpenAI, nearly 90% of teenagers already use ChatGPT weekly for educational purposes.

What’s actually different for teen users

ChatGPT for Teens ships with Study Mode, which walks students through problems step by step rather than serving up direct answers. Study Mode also includes break reminders and quiet hours functionality.

The teen version deploys stricter content filters specifically calibrated to shield younger users from graphic violence, self-harm content, sexual material, and risky challenges. These filters sit on top of the standard safety protocols that apply to all ChatGPT users.

The identification piece is handled by an age-prediction system that OpenAI first implemented in September 2025. When the system determines a user is likely between 13 and 17, it automatically routes them into the teen experience.

The parental controls balancing act

Parents can link their accounts to their teen’s account and manage certain settings. They receive notifications when the system flags serious risks, but do not get full access to their children’s conversations.

To support families who may not be fluent in the nuances of AI safety, OpenAI developed family guides available in over 50 languages.

Built under pressure

The launch didn’t happen in a vacuum. OpenAI has been navigating ongoing legal challenges related to youth safety in AI usage. The development process involved consultations with external experts, including the organization Moonshot and educators focused on adolescent well-being. OpenAI also updated its Model Spec in December 2025, with those updates including more detailed guidance on interactions with younger users.

The product is available on both Free and paid personal plans, meaning OpenAI isn’t gating the safety features behind a subscription.
