President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman if the Gulf state obstructs US efforts involving the Strait of Hormuz, according to Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst.
Yingst said Trump made the threat during an interview Monday as Oman and Iran worked toward an agreement to manage commercial shipping through the waterway.
Two regional officials told the Associated Press that Trump was angered by the prospect of an Oman-Iran deal. Oman has long acted as a mediator between Washington and Tehran and hosts US forces.
Iran has described the talks as an effort to establish safe navigation while protecting the sovereignty and security interests of countries bordering the strait. Oman’s Foreign Ministry had not publicly responded to Trump’s warning as of Tuesday.
Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained amid the US-Iran conflict, disrupting flows through one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
