FC Porto demands better buy obligation terms for Rodrigo Mora transfer to AS Roma

FC Porto and AS Roma have been negotiating a deal for Rodrigo Mora, with the Portuguese club refusing to greenlight the 19-year-old midfielder’s move to Rome until the buy obligation clause gets a serious upgrade.

As of mid-August 2026, both clubs are deep into negotiations but stuck on the financial mechanics of what would be one of the summer’s more significant young-talent transfers.

What’s on the table

Roma’s approach has centered on a loan-with-buy-option structure. Their recent proposals include a loan fee in the range of €5M to €8M, paired with a purchase option valued between €42M and €45M.

Porto has been pushing for a total valuation around €50M. One structure that’s been floated would split that into two installments of €25M each: one this summer, one next summer. The club also wants a 50% sell-on clause baked into any deal, ensuring they’d benefit financially if Mora is eventually flipped to an even bigger club down the road.

Why Porto is digging in

Rodrigo Mora is a 2007-born product of Porto’s academy. At 19, he represents both immediate squad value and future transfer leverage.

The distinction between a buy “option” and a buy “obligation” matters enormously here. An option gives Roma the right, but not the requirement, to purchase Mora permanently after the loan. If he gets injured or underperforms, Roma could theoretically send him back. An obligation means Roma commits to the purchase regardless, typically once certain conditions are met, like appearances or the team avoiding relegation.

Porto wants the latter, and they want the conditions triggering it to be as close to automatic as possible.

Roma’s calculation

The gap between the two sides isn’t necessarily about the total number. Both clubs seem to agree that Mora’s value sits in the neighborhood of €45M to €50M. The disagreement is about certainty: when and under what conditions Roma actually pays that figure.

What to watch

The sell-on clause could end up being the pressure valve that breaks the impasse. If Porto secures a robust 50% sell-on percentage, they might accept slightly softer language on the obligation trigger.

Roma’s interest is driven in part by coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who is keen to integrate Mora into the squad ahead of the 2026–27 season. Mora’s profile has been enhanced by senior appearances including in the Europa League.
