Fiorentina agrees loan deal to sign João Mário from Juventus as Serie A transfer merry-go-round continues

1 hour ago 24

Fiorentina has reached an agreement to bring João Mário to Florence on loan from Juventus, complete with a buy option that could turn the temporary move into a permanent one. The deal, struck in late July 2026, follows a familiar Serie A playbook: take the player, try him out, then decide whether to write the big check later.

For Mário, a Portuguese right-back who joined Juventus from Porto, this represents yet another attempt to find consistent playing time at a club that actually wants to use him.

The numbers behind the deal

Juventus reportedly valued Mário in the range of €12-13 million. Fiorentina came back with a package around €9 million.

The loan-with-option format bridges that valuation disconnect. Fiorentina doesn’t have to commit the full fee upfront. If Mário performs well, they can exercise the buy option by the end of the 2026-27 season.

Earlier rumors from June 2026 had suggested a potential loan with an obligation to buy, valued at €8-10 million. The final structure landing on an option rather than an obligation gives Fiorentina more flexibility.

Why Mário needs a fresh start

Mário arrived at Juventus with solid credentials from his time at Porto, but breaking into the starting XI proved to be a different challenge altogether. The solution during the 2025-26 season was a loan move to Bologna for the second half of the campaign, where he managed more game time than he was getting in Turin. But the stint at Bologna didn’t result in a permanent deal.

Fiorentina is looking to add depth and experience on the right flank. If the loan works out, they have the option to sign Mário permanently at a negotiated price.
