Ethereum ETH

Ethereum is a blockchain network that supports transactions and programs called smart contracts. Ether, usually abbreviated ETH, is its native asset. The network and the asset are related, but the name of an application or token on Ethereum does not mean that the application is operated by Ethereum itself.

A smart contract is code that runs according to rules recorded on the network. Applications combine contracts with interfaces that people use through wallets and websites. A wallet signs a request; the network then processes a transaction and updates its shared state. Gas measures the computational work associated with that execution. That distinction helps explain why a transfer and a more complex contract interaction can require different amounts of work.

Ethereum documentation describes nodes, accounts, transactions, the Ethereum Virtual Machine and proof of stake as separate parts of this system. Reading a product announcement should therefore include identifying which part actually changed. A new interface is different from a change to the base network.
