Manchester United plays 300th Champions League fixture on Thursday

Manchester United will step onto the Old Trafford pitch on Thursday evening for their 300th Champions League match, a number no other British club has reached. The opponent is Sabah, the fixture is scheduled for 8pm BST, and the occasion doubles as a homecoming: United are back in Europe’s premier club competition after spending two full seasons on the outside looking in.

Manager Michael Carrick guided United back through a strong 2025-26 Premier League campaign, with qualification confirmed in May 2026.

The record behind the milestone

Heading into Thursday’s fixture, United’s all-time Champions League ledger reads 299 matches: 161 wins, 70 draws, 68 losses, 545 goals scored, and 299 conceded. That win rate sits just north of 53%.

United have lifted the Champions League trophy three times, in 1968, 1999, and 2008, and reached the final on five occasions total. The 1999 triumph in Barcelona, with those Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stoppage-time goals against Bayern Munich, remains one of the most replayed sequences in football history. The 2008 win over Chelsea in Moscow, decided on penalties, added another layer to the club’s European mythology.

A new format for a new era

The 2026/27 edition uses the revamped league-phase format that replaced the traditional group stage. Instead of four teams in a group playing six matches, 36 clubs now compete in a single league table, each playing eight fixtures against eight different opponents before knockout rounds begin in February 2027.

The draw took place on August 27, 2026, and United’s schedule across the eight matchdays running from September 2026 through January 2027 includes meetings with Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.

United first entered the European Cup in the 1956-57 season under Matt Busby, becoming one of the first English clubs to compete in the continental tournament despite resistance from the Football League.
