Mastercard completes acquisition of BVNK to enhance payments strategy

Mastercard has closed its acquisition of BVNK, the London-based stablecoin infrastructure provider, in a deal worth up to $1.8 billion. The transaction, which wrapped up ahead of its original timeline, represents the largest acquisition in the stablecoin sector to date.

The acquisition breaks down into $1.5 billion in fixed consideration plus an additional $300 million tied to performance metrics. Mastercard first announced the deal on March 17, 2026, and completed it on August 3, 2026, beating the initially expected timeline that had regulatory approvals penciled in for later in the year.

BVNK, founded in 2021, had previously raised a Series B round at an approximate valuation of $750 million back in December 2024. Mastercard paid roughly 2.4x what private investors valued the company less than two years ago.

The company operates across more than 130 countries and processes billions of dollars in annual stablecoin transaction volume. Its client roster includes names like Worldpay and Flywire. BVNK’s core value proposition is bridging the gap between on-chain stablecoin payments and traditional fiat currency rails.

By acquiring BVNK outright, Mastercard now controls the infrastructure that connects stablecoin transactions to fiat payment flows. Stablecoin transaction volumes reportedly hit at least $350 billion in 2025, according to estimates from Boston Consulting Group.

BVNK’s technology handles the messy work of converting between stablecoins and fiat, managing compliance across jurisdictions, and ensuring that on-chain transactions meet the regulatory standards that traditional payment networks require.

Visa has been making its own moves in the stablecoin space, and PayPal launched its own stablecoin in 2023. Mastercard’s acquisition of BVNK escalates an arms race among payment networks to control the on-ramps and off-ramps between digital assets and traditional currency.
