Metaplanet just made its clearest signal yet that it doesn’t want to be “Japan’s MicroStrategy” forever. The Tokyo-listed company is acquiring Siiibo Securities for 2.1 billion yen, roughly $13 million, in a deal that shifts its identity from passive Bitcoin hoarder to active Bitcoin-financial platform.
The acquisition is the first major move under what Metaplanet calls “Project Nova,” a strategy to construct an entire Bitcoin-focused financial ecosystem within Japan’s regulated framework.
What Metaplanet is actually building
Siiibo Securities comes with something money can’t easily buy: a brokerage license. That license gives Metaplanet the regulatory green light to offer Bitcoin-linked investment products to Japanese investors through a proper, licensed channel. Instead of just holding Bitcoin and hoping the stock price tracks it, Metaplanet wants to build yield products around Bitcoin and sell them directly.
The company currently holds 2,235 BTC after its most recent purchase of 135 BTC for approximately $13 million. It also has access to a $500 million BTC-collateralized credit facility, which it can use to finance share buybacks and further Bitcoin accumulation.
Project Nova and the bigger picture
The Siiibo acquisition is explicitly the first step in Project Nova, not the whole plan. The $500 million credit facility gives the company significant dry powder to move quickly.
Metaplanet is attempting to use its Bitcoin holdings as the foundation for an actual financial services business, creating revenue streams beyond just Bitcoin price appreciation through fees from Bitcoin-linked products.
What investors should watch
The immediate question is whether Metaplanet can integrate Siiibo Securities smoothly and launch its first Bitcoin-linked products without regulatory hiccups. Japan’s Financial Services Agency is thorough, and any product offering will need to clear multiple approval gates.
The second question is scale. At 2,235 BTC, Metaplanet’s treasury is meaningful but not massive. The $500 million credit facility suggests the company plans to grow that position aggressively, but leveraged Bitcoin accumulation carries obvious risks during downturns. A sharp Bitcoin correction could pressure both the treasury value and the credit facility simultaneously.
For now, the $13 million price tag on Siiibo Securities looks modest relative to the ambition.
