OPEC slashes 2026 oil demand growth forecast for fifth straight month

OPEC has chopped its 2026 global oil demand growth forecast again, cutting the projection to 380,000 barrels per day from the 580,000 bpd it predicted just last month. That’s a 200,000 bpd haircut in a single revision, and the fifth consecutive monthly downgrade since February.

The cumulative damage is staggering. Back in February 2026, OPEC pegged demand growth at 1.38 million bpd. Five months of revisions later, that figure has shrunk by roughly 1 million bpd, a 72% reduction.

What’s driving the downgrades

Geopolitics sits at the center of this story. The ongoing conflict involving Iran has sent shockwaves through energy markets, simultaneously constraining supply and pushing Brent crude above $100 per barrel. That price level acts as a brake on consumption, particularly in price-sensitive economies across Asia-Pacific and in China, the world’s largest crude importer.

OPEC’s September report pegs average global oil demand for 2026 at approximately 105.84 million bpd.

The International Energy Agency has taken an even bleaker view, expecting an outright decline in demand this year.

OPEC bets on a 2027 rebound

Despite the gloomy near-term outlook, OPEC raised its 2027 demand growth forecast to 2.36 million bpd. The logic: once geopolitical tensions ease and the drag from elevated prices fades, pent-up demand will snap back.

Market implications and what to watch

Brent crude above $100 per barrel creates a complicated environment for both producers and consumers. For OPEC members, high prices boost revenue per barrel but risk accelerating the very demand destruction their forecasts now reflect.

The pattern of serial downgrades also carries a credibility cost. Each time OPEC revises its outlook lower, market participants discount the next forecast a little more. Five consecutive cuts in five months transforms what might have been a one-off adjustment into a trend.
