Sam Altman, the CEO of the company that kicked off the generative AI frenzy three years ago, now concedes the revolution is behind schedule. In a podcast interview released around August 23-24, Altman said the AI industry has “not had the iPhone moment,” framing the current state of affairs as a failure of product imagination rather than underlying technology.
The technology works, the products don’t
Altman drew an analogy to the pre-iPhone era, recalling his old Palm Treo from the early 2000s. The smartphone technology existed before Apple’s 2007 launch, but nobody had assembled it into something that fundamentally changed daily life. That’s where AI sits today, in Altman’s view. The models are powerful, the infrastructure is built, but no company has created the product that makes AI feel indispensable to ordinary consumers. He described this as a “product failure” rather than a technological shortfall.
He also acknowledged that he and others were too optimistic about the timeline for AI adoption following GPT-4’s 2023 launch. The expectation was that economic disruption would follow quickly. Instead, existing habits, entrenched workflows, and societal inertia have slowed the transition considerably.
Altman also emphasized that AI firms need to sharpen their focus and improve how they communicate about both benefits and risks.
The numbers behind the narrative
OpenAI’s Q2 2026 financials underscore the tension between growth and sustainability. Revenue hit $6.7 billion for the quarter, up 18% from $5.7 billion the prior quarter. More troubling: operating losses widened to $12.3 billion in Q2. OpenAI is spending nearly two dollars for every dollar it brings in.
The contrast with Anthropic is stark. OpenAI’s chief rival reported roughly $11.6 billion in Q2 revenue, more than doubling from the previous quarter. Perhaps more importantly, Anthropic posted its first adjusted operating profit. Both companies are reportedly eyeing IPOs, with OpenAI pushing its public listing plans to 2027 amid competitive pressures.
