Paris Saint-Germain confirms signing of Lucas Digne from Aston Villa

Lucas Digne is going home. Paris Saint-Germain have officially confirmed the signing of the French left-back from Aston Villa, completing a transfer that brings the 33-year-old back to the club he left nearly a decade ago.

The deal, valued at just under €10 million (roughly £8.5 million or $13.3 million), was triggered through a release clause in Digne’s contract with Villa. He’s signed a three-year deal that keeps him at Parc des Princes until June 2029.

A full-circle moment for Digne

Digne played for PSG from 2013 to 2016, racking up over 50 appearances before moving on to Barcelona, then Roma on loan, then Everton, and eventually Aston Villa.

He joined Villa from Everton in January 2022 for £25 million, establishing himself as a reliable presence in their backline. The club extended his contract until 2028 as recently as August 2025.

The move also reunites Digne with PSG head coach Luis Enrique, under whom he previously played at Barcelona. Reports of the deal first surfaced around mid-July 2026, and by early August, multiple sources had confirmed the transfer was essentially done.

What PSG gets from the deal

PSG’s left-back position has been anchored by Nuno Mendes, the Portuguese international who remains one of the more dynamic fullbacks in European football. Digne provides a proven alternative with crossing ability, set-piece delivery, and years of Premier League competition.

Digne turns 33 on July 20, 2026. PSG are paying sub-€10 million for a player with Champions League, international, and top-five-league experience across multiple countries.

What it means for Aston Villa

Villa originally paid £25 million to bring Digne from Everton in early 2022. Receiving roughly £8.5 million for a player after three-plus years of service represents standard depreciation in the transfer market.

Digne left PSG in 2016 as a young defender who hadn’t quite locked down a starting spot. He returns as a veteran having played under coaches including Unai Emery, Luis Enrique, and Rafa Benitez across different leagues and systems.
