Privacy coins rise 213%, leading crypto sector gains: Glassnode

While most of crypto has spent 2026 licking its wounds, one corner of the market has been quietly doing victory laps. Privacy coins have surged 213% since Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak, making them the only sector in Glassnode’s classification system trading above those levels.

Everything else is underwater. Bitcoin itself is down 36% from that peak. The median top-200 asset has fallen 58%. DeFi is off 27%. Gaming tokens have cratered 74%. And then there’s the privacy sector, casually quadrupling its market cap in a year.

The numbers behind the breakout

According to Glassnode data released on September 7, 2026, the total market cap of privacy coins among the top 200 assets has ballooned from $7.1B to $33.6B over the past twelve months. That’s a nearly fivefold increase, and the pace is accelerating: roughly $13B of that growth landed in just the last 30 days.

In that same 30-day window, the privacy sector posted a 90% gain, leading a broader market rebound that saw 91.5% of top-200 assets move higher.

The standout performer, and it’s not particularly close, is Zcash. ZEC has delivered a 2,496% return year-to-date, vaulting from the 82nd position in overall market rankings all the way up to 7th. It now accounts for approximately 62% of the entire privacy sector’s market capitalization.

Strip out Zcash and privacy coins still win

Even excluding ZEC entirely, a market-cap-weighted portfolio of the remaining privacy assets has posted an 85% gain over the past year. Measured from Bitcoin’s October 2025 high, the ex-ZEC privacy basket is still up 56%.

Only four assets in the entire top 200 are trading above their October 2025 prices: Zcash, Monero, and two others. Meanwhile, all eight privacy coins with at least a year of price history have posted gains over that period.

Monero has been the sector’s other pillar. XMR is one of the handful of assets exceeding its October 2025 price, continuing a pattern of relative strength that became visible during the volatility of late 2025.

Why privacy, why now

The late-2025 period proved instructive. When volatility spiked in October and November of that year, privacy coins held up notably better than most sectors. That resilience likely attracted a new wave of capital that has since compounded into the gains we’re seeing now.

ZEC’s ascent from obscurity to top-10 status illustrates how dramatically sentiment can shift within a single cycle. A year ago, Zcash was an 82nd-ranked asset. Its 2,496% YTD return is a reminder that crypto markets can reprice entire narratives in a matter of months.

The concentration risk is real, though. With ZEC representing 62% of the sector’s market cap, any significant pullback in Zcash would ripple through the entire privacy category’s performance metrics. The $33.6B sector valuation looks a lot more fragile when roughly $20B of it sits in a single asset that was worth a fraction of that twelve months ago.
