Ruben Amorim close to new managerial role after Manchester United stint

1 hour ago 12

Ruben Amorim’s post-Manchester United sabbatical appears to be ending before it really began. The Portuguese manager, who was sacked from Old Trafford in January 2026, is reportedly in advanced discussions with AC Milan over their vacant managerial position.

From Old Trafford to the San Siro

Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United was, to put it gently, not the transformative era the club had hoped for. Appointed in November 2024, he lasted just 14 months before the axe fell on January 5, 2026.

The final straw was a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

Over 63 matches in charge, Amorim managed 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 losses. That translates to a win percentage of 38%.

In the months following his departure, reports from April and May 2026 suggested Amorim was planning to take a step back from the game entirely. He had reportedly ruled out a return to manage in Portugal.

Now, as of mid-June 2026, the picture has changed significantly. AC Milan have reportedly entered advanced talks with the 41-year-old to take over their dugout, succeeding Max Allegri following his termination from the role.

Why AC Milan makes sense

Amorim built his managerial reputation at Sporting CP on a distinctive 3-4-3 system that emphasized positional play and aggressive pressing. At United, implementing that system proved enormously difficult with a squad that had been assembled across multiple managerial philosophies, none of which resembled his own.

For Manchester United fans, the move might prompt mixed emotions. Amorim’s record at Old Trafford — 38% win rate across 63 games — doesn’t exactly scream missed opportunity.
