Russell Martin agrees three-year contract with Leicester City

Russell Martin has agreed to a three-year deal to become Leicester City’s new manager, tasked with engineering a revival for a club that has tumbled from Premier League champions to England’s third tier in barely a decade.

The 40-year-old former Scotland international, who was sacked by Rangers in October 2025, is expected to be formally announced shortly after the agreement was finalized around June 13, 2026.

From title winners to League One

Leicester City’s trajectory over the past ten years reads like a cautionary tale about football’s fragile economics. The club that pulled off the most improbable title win in Premier League history during the 2015-16 season now finds itself preparing for the 2026-27 League One campaign after relegation from the Championship.

The club had actually targeted Martin last summer before he opted to take the managerial position at Rangers. That he’s now available, and that Leicester circled back, suggests the interest was always genuine rather than opportunistic.

Martin’s managerial track record

Martin cut his managerial teeth at Swansea City, where he implemented a possession-based philosophy. Then came Southampton, where Martin managed to lead the club to promotion to the Premier League in 2024. The Rangers stint was less successful. Martin lasted barely a year at Ibrox before being sacked in October 2025.
