Samsung SDS launches Korea’s first NPU-as-a-Service on FuriosaAI’s RNGD chip

South Korea just got its first taste of NPU-as-a-Service, and it did not come from the usual suspects. Samsung SDS launched what it’s calling Korea’s inaugural subscription-based NPU cloud offering on July 16, 2026, running on FuriosaAI’s RNGD inference accelerator inside the Samsung Cloud Platform. The target market is telling: government agencies and public-sector clients, not just the hyperscaler crowd chasing benchmark scores.

What the RNGD actually does, and why the numbers matter

FuriosaAI’s RNGD chip, internally called Renegade, is a 180W TDP PCIe card built on TSMC’s 5nm process and paired with SK Hynix HBM3 memory. It entered mass production in January 2026, which means this service launch is running on hardware that is barely six months into commercial life.

The performance figures presented at FuriosaAI’s inaugural RENEGADE 2026 Summit are worth sitting with. The RNGD handles up to 7.4 times more concurrent users than the NVIDIA RTX Pro 6000. On the Qwen3-32B FP8 model workload, the RNGD supports 1.8 to 2 times more users per kilowatt compared to the competition.

Samsung SDS is offering flexible configurations ranging from 1 to 8 accelerator cards, covering training, inference, and serverless AI tasks. The service sits within two existing Samsung platforms, FabriX and Brity Works, which means enterprise customers do not have to rebuild their operational workflows around new tooling.

The partnership timeline and the ecosystem forming around it

Samsung SDS and FuriosaAI did not roll this out overnight. The collaboration formally began in September 2025, giving both companies roughly ten months of integration and testing before the public launch.

The RENEGADE 2026 Summit also revealed a broader partner list: LG AI Research, MegazoneCloud, and Anexia are all part of the emerging RENEGADE ecosystem. That combination of a major conglomerate research lab, a cloud distributor, and a European managed service provider suggests FuriosaAI is building channel depth, not just point-to-point deals.

What this means for the competitive landscape and investors

For Samsung SDS specifically, this service opens a path to government contracts that would be difficult to win with foreign hardware at the center of the stack. South Korea’s national AI strategy explicitly favors domestic technology in sensitive compute environments. An NPUaaS built on Korean silicon, run by a Samsung subsidiary, is about as sovereign as it gets.

FuriosaAI, still a startup relative to the giants it is competing against, now has a tier-1 enterprise distribution partner and a government-facing pipeline. The risks are real: hardware startups have stumbled at scale before, and production yields, driver maturity, and software ecosystem depth are all areas where newer entrants historically face friction. But the structure of this launch, with a major cloud platform absorbing the operational complexity, reduces the exposure that would come from going direct to market alone.
