Sergiño Dest scores first UCL goal in 6 years for PSV Eindhoven

Six years is a long time between Champions League goals. For Sergiño Dest, the wait ended in the 48th minute at Philips Stadion on September 10, when his right-footed finish pulled PSV Eindhoven level in a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The goal was only Dest’s second ever in the competition, his first coming back in November 2020 when he wore a Barcelona shirt against Dynamo Kyiv.

How the match unfolded

Shakhtar’s Gleiker Mendoza struck in first-half stoppage time to give the Ukrainian side a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Just three minutes after the restart, Dest latched onto a pass from center-back Armando Obispo and drove a right-footed shot home to restore parity.

Neither side could find a winner after that, and the match ended 1-1. Both teams walked away with a single point from their opening fixture.

Dest’s quiet resurgence

Across five appearances in all competitions this season, Dest has contributed three goals and two assists.

Dest joined PSV Eindhoven from FC Barcelona in 2024 and had to overcome a lengthy recovery from an ACL injury that limited his appearances during the 2024/25 season.

What it means for PSV’s European campaign

Their next Champions League fixture comes on October 13 against RB Leipzig.
