Sheba Medical Center tests OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Healthcare in Israel

Sheba Medical Center, one of the most technologically advanced hospitals on the planet, is bringing OpenAI’s healthcare AI tools into its wards, labs, and administrative offices. The Ramat Gan-based institution announced on July 28 that it will become the first hospital outside the United States to deploy OpenAI’s dedicated healthcare platform, marking a significant expansion of AI-assisted medicine beyond American borders.

The partnership centers on ChatGPT for Healthcare, a specialized version of OpenAI’s conversational AI designed to help clinicians synthesize peer-reviewed medical literature, navigate clinical guidelines, and process public health data.

What the platform actually does

A clinician preparing a treatment plan can query the system to pull relevant studies, flag potential drug interactions, or summarize the latest guidelines on a rare condition. The platform also aims to streamline administrative tasks, the kind of paperwork burden that eats into the hours doctors could spend with actual patients.

Sheba plans to integrate its own clinical protocols directly into the AI platform, tuning the system to the specific workflows, treatment pathways, and institutional standards that Sheba’s teams already follow.

The rollout will happen in phases across clinical, research, and operational teams.

The data question, answered upfront

Sheba and OpenAI have committed to a zero-data-retention policy. No patient information will be stored by the platform, and no clinical data will be used to train OpenAI’s machine learning models.

Human oversight remains central to the deployment. Clinicians are explicitly responsible for all final decisions. The AI can suggest, summarize, and surface information, but it does not diagnose, prescribe, or treat.

Why Sheba, and why now

Sheba Medical Center has consistently ranked among the world’s top smart hospitals and has built a reputation for aggressive digital transformation. Its ARC innovation center, which stands for Accelerate, Redesign, Collaborate, has been the institutional engine behind these efforts.

The hospital’s leadership has publicly stated its ambition to become an entirely AI-powered institution. This OpenAI partnership is one concrete step in that direction.

For OpenAI, the move represents an international expansion of its healthcare ambitions. The company has previously engaged with select US hospitals. Sheba represents the next ring of that expansion.

A delegation from Sheba is scheduled to visit OpenAI’s headquarters in August 2026. The visit is designed to deepen the collaboration, give Sheba early access to upcoming models, and establish a feedback loop where the hospital’s clinicians contribute to product development.
