Team Spirit has locked in their spot in the IEM Cologne Major 2026 playoffs, becoming only the second team to advance out of Stage 3. For an organization defending a Major title, this is the kind of statement that makes the rest of the field nervous.
The tournament, running from June 2 to June 21, 2026, in Cologne, Germany, features a $1.25 million prize pool. Thirty-two teams entered across three stages, but only eight will survive to compete in the playoffs. Team Spirit just made sure they’re one of them.
How they got here
Team Spirit entered Stage 2 via a Europe VRS invite after an inconsistent stretch of results earlier in the year. Then they went 3-0 in that stage. Without their head coach. And without their assistant coach.
Stage 3 followed the Swiss format with best-of-3 matchups. Along the way, they notched victories over Natus Vincere and Aurora.
The roster includes Danil “donk” Kryshkovets, Boris “magixx” Vorobiev, Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov, Andrey “tN1R” Tatarinovich, and Myroslav “zont1x” Plakhotia.
Defending champions with something to prove
Team Spirit won the 2025 Cologne Major. Defending a Major title in CS2 is one of the hardest things to do in competitive esports. Playing without both coaches in a tournament of this caliber would normally be a crisis-level situation. Instead, the team went 3-0 in Stage 2 and qualified for the playoffs as only the second team out of Stage 3.
What this means for the tournament and the broader scene
With Team Spirit locking in their playoff berth as just the second team to advance, only six more teams will join them in the playoff bracket from the remaining Stage 3 competition.
The coaching absence adds a relevant wrinkle to the playoffs. Team Spirit has proven they can win without their coaches in Stage 2, but playoff series are longer and more preparation-intensive. Whether the team addresses this situation before the playoff stage begins is an open question.
