TotalEnergies partners with Mistral AI in deal worth over €100 million to enhance oil exploration

TotalEnergies is pouring more than €100 million into a three-year partnership with French AI startup Mistral AI, aiming to build bespoke artificial intelligence models that can improve how the company finds and extracts oil and gas. The deal, announced on September 15, pairs one of Europe’s largest energy majors with one of the continent’s most prominent AI companies.

The core pitch: take nearly a century’s worth of TotalEnergies’ geoscience knowledge, combine it with Mistral’s agentic AI technology, and build tools that can generate exploration scenarios faster and more accurately than human teams working alone.

What the partnership actually involves

The two companies plan to establish a joint scientific laboratory where their respective teams will work side by side. TotalEnergies brings the domain expertise and, critically, an enormous dataset: nearly 10 petaflops of subsurface data accumulated over decades of global exploration. Mistral brings the AI architecture to make sense of it all.

The investment, which exceeds €100 million (roughly $115 million), will fund the development of proprietary AI models tailored specifically to upstream geoscience. The models are designed to optimize the lifespan of existing oil and gas fields while improving how the company evaluates new exploration targets.

One of the key capabilities the partnership aims to unlock is scenario generation. In traditional reservoir engineering, teams spend months modeling different development plans for a field, weighing variables like pressure, porosity, and production rates against economic assumptions. AI could compress that timeline dramatically, allowing engineers to evaluate far more scenarios and identify optimal approaches that might otherwise be overlooked.

Building on an existing relationship

This isn’t a cold start. TotalEnergies and Mistral AI first began working together in June 2025, when the two companies explored AI applications across TotalEnergies’ broader multi-energy strategy. That earlier collaboration covered a wider range of topics, including low-carbon energy initiatives, emissions reduction, and asset performance optimization.

The new deal narrows the scope considerably, zeroing in on the upstream geoscience work that remains the financial engine of TotalEnergies’ business.

Why Mistral, and why it matters for Europe

The choice of Mistral AI as a partner carries significance beyond the technical merits. Mistral is among the most high-profile AI companies in Europe, positioning itself as a credible alternative to US-based giants like OpenAI and Anthropic. For TotalEnergies, working with a French AI firm rather than an American one aligns with Europe’s growing emphasis on digital sovereignty. Subsurface geological data represents decades of proprietary investment, and keeping the partnership within European borders simplifies concerns around data jurisdiction and intellectual property.

Implications for the energy sector

The financial commitment here, north of €100 million over three years, signals that AI in energy has moved well past the pilot-project phase. This is a production-scale investment with defined deliverables and a dedicated laboratory.
