Yan Diomande set for first match at Bernabéu with Real Madrid

Yan Diomande will step onto the Santiago Bernabéu pitch as a Real Madrid player for the first time tonight, capping one of the most meteoric rises in recent football history. The 19-year-old Ivorian winger, who cost the Spanish giants a fixed fee of €125 million from RB Leipzig, is set to feature against Real Sociedad in what marks the beginning of a new chapter for both player and club.

That €125 million figure, which could climb to €140 million with add-ons, makes Diomande the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s storied history. He surpasses the fee paid for Jude Bellingham, who now happens to be one of his teammates.

The path from that Leganés debut to a record-breaking transfer ran through Germany. Diomande spent the 2025-26 season at RB Leipzig, where his performances triggered a bidding war that Real Madrid ultimately won. His move was finalized on August 6, 2026.

Diomande already made his first appearance in a Real Madrid shirt on August 16, 2026, coming off the bench as a substitute in the 61st minute of a pre-season friendly against Schalke 04.

The first Ivorian in Real Madrid history

Beyond the price tag, Diomande carries a distinction that no amount of money can buy. He is the first player from Ivory Coast to ever represent Real Madrid.

His international pedigree adds further weight to the signing. Diomande has already represented Ivory Coast at the World Cup before most players his age have settled into a consistent starting role at club level.

Diomande’s arrival is part of a broader squad overhaul under new manager José Mourinho, who is embarking on his inaugural season at the helm. The Portuguese tactician has also brought in Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva during the summer transfer window.
