Bitcoin.com integrates USDU, the UAE’s first central bank-registered dollar stablecoin, into its wallet

Bitcoin.com has added USDU, the first US dollar-backed stablecoin registered with the Central Bank of the UAE, to its self-custodial wallet on both web and mobile. The integration, announced on August 19, 2026, represents a partnership with Universal Digital Intl. Limited and gives Bitcoin.com’s user base the ability to hold, send, and receive USDU as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.

Until now, USDU has lived primarily in institutional corridors. Its previous integration, a June 2026 deal with AI Financial Corporation, targeted professional clients. This is the stablecoin’s first meaningful push into retail territory, and it chose one of crypto’s longest-running consumer wallet brands to do it.

What USDU actually is

USDU received its registration from the Central Bank of the UAE on January 29, 2026, making it the first and, as of now, only USD-backed stablecoin authorized by the CBUAE. It operates as a Foreign Payment Token under the country’s Payment Token Services Regulation.

The token is backed 1:1 by liquid US dollar reserves held at two of the UAE’s largest banking institutions: Emirates NBD and Mashreq. Monthly independent attestations verifying those reserves are published on Universal’s website. The smart contract underpinning USDU was audited by CertiK.

Universal Digital itself is regulated by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority within the Abu Dhabi Global Market, adding another layer of oversight.

There’s an important caveat, though. USDU is currently limited to professional clients and designated use cases. It cannot be used for general UAE Dirham payments.

Why Bitcoin.com, and why now

Bitcoin.com CEO Corbin Fraser pointed to transparency as the driving factor behind the partnership. Universal’s CEO Juha Viitala framed it as a natural pairing: self-custody philosophy meets regulatory assurance.

Bitcoin.com plans to expand USDU’s functionality beyond basic transfers. The roadmap includes peer-to-peer payments, educational tools, and third-party swap integrations. Accepting USDU as payment for Bitcoin.com’s own services is also on the table.

No public market cap or circulating supply figures exist for USDU, which tells you something about where it sits in its lifecycle. This is still a specialized, regionally focused asset rather than a global liquidity vehicle.
