Football clubs are no strangers to managerial drama, but Chelsea has made something of an art form out of it. Their latest chapter involves Enzo Maresca, who walked away from Stamford Bridge on January 1, 2026, to pursue what the club diplomatically described as “another opportunity.” That opportunity, it turns out, was a seat at Manchester City’s table as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola.
Chelsea has since confirmed the circumstances of Maresca’s exit, including a confidential settlement worth approximately £4.3 million. What remains unresolved is the larger question of what Manchester City owes Chelsea for pulling their head coach away mid-project.
How we got here
Maresca’s connection to City runs deep. He served as one of Guardiola’s assistants at the Etihad, contributing to the club’s treble-winning season in 2023 before Chelsea brought him in as head coach in 2024.
Under Maresca, Chelsea claimed the FIFA Club World Cup title in 2025, a genuine piece of silverware that gave the club’s ownership something to point to after years of expensive rebuilding. Then, just as things were coming together, Maresca was gone.
Chelsea framed it as a mutual parting following discussions with City about Maresca’s potential role.
The money question
Maresca’s exit triggered a confidential settlement between him and Chelsea worth roughly £4.3 million. Reports have placed the figure that Manchester City could owe Chelsea somewhere around £17.2 million, or approximately €20 million. The logic is straightforward enough: Chelsea had Maresca under contract, City’s interest effectively ended that contract early, and Chelsea is entitled to compensation for the disruption.
As of mid-2026, those negotiations are still ongoing. Manchester City has not confirmed any formal appointment of Maresca, which means the entire situation exists in a kind of administrative limbo where significant money is at stake but no clean resolution is in sight.
