Manchester United is emerging as the frontrunner for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with the 25-year-old German international reportedly favoring Old Trafford over a move to Newcastle United.
United’s recruitment team has ramped up contact with Nmecha’s representatives in recent weeks. And while no deal has been finalized, Nmecha wants to return to England with Manchester United specifically.
Newcastle priced out, Chelsea still lurking
Newcastle United had been tracking Nmecha but has cooled its interest, largely because of Dortmund’s asking price. The Bundesliga club has placed a valuation on Nmecha somewhere between €50M and €100M.
Chelsea remains in the picture as a credible alternative. Alongside Manchester United, the Blues are positioned as one of the two leading suitors for Nmecha’s signature. Interest from Manchester City and Liverpool has also been noted, though neither club appears to have pursued Nmecha with the same urgency as United and Chelsea. The situation remains fluid heading into the back end of June.
World Cup audition turned shop window
Nmecha’s performances for Germany during the 2026 FIFA World Cup elevated his profile considerably, driving the current wave of interest. He had previously impressed at Wolfsburg before making the move to Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund signed Nmecha to a new contract earlier in 2026, strengthening their negotiating position. That new contract means Dortmund can hold firm on their €50M–€100M valuation without the usual pressure of a ticking contractual clock.
What this means for Manchester United
For United, landing Nmecha would represent a signing in midfield for a player who is 25 and just proved himself at a World Cup. Even at the lower end of Dortmund’s reported valuation, €50M is a substantial commitment for a single midfielder. At the upper end, €100M enters rarefied territory. Where the final number lands will depend on how many clubs remain genuinely engaged and how firmly Nmecha communicates his preference to his current employer.
