Interbank, one of Peru’s largest banks and a subsidiary of the Intercorp conglomerate, has signed a direct enterprise agreement with Anthropic to integrate Claude AI into its banking operations. The deal makes Interbank the first Peruvian bank to establish this kind of direct relationship with Anthropic.
Most institutions in the region access AI tools through intermediaries or cloud platform marketplaces. Interbank skipped the middleman.
What the deal actually involves
Under the agreement, Interbank gains access to Anthropic’s enterprise-grade Claude tools, configured to meet the compliance requirements specific to the financial industry.
The initial deployment is deliberately narrow. Claude Enterprise has been rolled out to a select group of employees, primarily knowledge workers and technology teams, accompanied by structured training programs designed to build internal AI literacy before scaling up.
Claudio Querol, Interbank’s VP of Data, Analytics & AI, framed the partnership as something bigger than automating spreadsheets. The goal, according to Querol, is to build AI capabilities that go beyond efficiency gains and generate meaningful new value across the organization. The vision is to make AI a foundational capability embedded throughout the bank’s operations, from customer-facing services to internal workflows.
Why this matters for Latin American banking
Direct enterprise AI partnerships with frontier model developers have remained uncommon in Latin America. Banks have generally relied on broader cloud agreements with Microsoft, Google, or Amazon, which bundle AI tools alongside infrastructure.
For Anthropic, the partnership extends its enterprise footprint into a market where it has had limited direct banking relationships. Anthropic has previously aligned with major firms like Goldman Sachs and FIS, focusing on applications such as accounting automation and financial crime prevention.
The broader AI-in-banking trend
The focus of the partnership is on the integration of generative AI and agentic AI capabilities into Interbank’s operations, aimed at enhancing customer experiences, fostering innovation, and optimizing internal processes. Generative AI produces text, summaries, and analysis, while agentic AI takes actions, executing multi-step tasks with some degree of autonomy.
The training component accompanies the initial rollout and is designed to promote responsible use of AI technologies, reflecting Interbank’s commitment to a progressive adoption guided by principles of accountability and effectiveness.
