Liverpool’s £50M bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh rejected as valuation gap widens

Liverpool’s pursuit of Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh hit an immediate wall after the Seagulls rejected a £50M bid for the 21-year-old. The gap between what Liverpool offered and what Brighton wants tells you everything about how the Premier League transfer market prices young, explosive talent in 2026.

Brighton reportedly values Minteh somewhere between £70M and £80M. That’s a spread of £20M to £30M between the two clubs’ assessments.

The Salah succession plan takes shape

Liverpool’s interest in Minteh isn’t random. The club has been exploring wide options as it looks toward life after Mohamed Salah. Minteh, a Gambia international who can operate on the wing with pace and directness, fits the profile of a long-term replacement.

Minteh only joined Brighton from Newcastle United in June 2024 for approximately £33M. Brighton’s valuation of the player has more than doubled since then. Brighton’s leverage here is considerable. Minteh’s contract runs until 2029, meaning there is no urgency to sell.

Why Brighton can afford to say no

For context, £50M would represent roughly a £17M profit on the fee Brighton paid Newcastle just two years ago. But Brighton’s front office clearly believes Minteh’s trajectory, age profile, and contract length justify holding out for significantly more.

Liverpool, for their part, aren’t short on financial resources. But Arne Slot’s side likely has multiple targets across several positions this summer, and overpaying on one deal constrains spending elsewhere.

The broader transfer market picture

Minteh arrived at Brighton as a promising talent with limited Premier League exposure. Two seasons later, he’s valued at more than double his purchase price by a club that has no contractual pressure to sell.

If Liverpool does eventually meet Brighton’s price, it would represent one of the club’s most expensive signings in a 21-year-old winger. If the deal falls apart, Brighton will carry on developing Minteh and waiting for an offer that reflects what they believe he’s worth.
