Rayo Vallecano nears loan deal for AS Roma defender Marash Kumbulla

Rayo Vallecano is in advanced talks to sign the 26-year-old Albanian center-back on loan from Roma, after reportedly submitting a contract proposal in late July 2026. No final agreement or medical has been confirmed as of early August.

The deal structure and what it tells us about football finance

Kumbulla’s current market value sits at approximately €3 million, according to Transfermarkt data from June 2026. Roma originally acquired him from Hellas Verona during the summer of 2021.

His contract with the Italian club runs through June 2028, meaning Roma is staring down the final two years of a depreciating asset on their books.

Kumbulla already has La Liga experience, having spent the 2025-26 season on loan at RCD Mallorca. That stint included an option to buy that was announced on August 18, 2025, though Mallorca evidently chose not to exercise it.

Why Rayo wants him and what Roma gets out of it

From Roma’s perspective, Kumbulla clearly isn’t in the first-team plans. His contract still has two years remaining, which means they can’t simply release him without eating the remaining amortized cost. A loan reduces the financial burden while keeping the option open for a future sale or another loan arrangement.
