Canadian crypto king Aiden Pleterski to represent himself at fraud trial

What happened

Aiden Pleterski, 27, faces fraud and money laundering charges at a Toronto jury trial and will represent himself. Justice Shaun Nakatsuru of the Ontario Superior Court refused to delay the case, so Pleterski will be without a lawyer for a four-week trial that was scheduled in June 2025.

The judge described an 'enhanced role' in which he will object for Pleterski to keep inadmissible evidence from the jury. For the adjournment request, Pleterski did have a lawyer, Marco Sciarra. Sciarra said his client had sought funds for a trial lawyer, and that extended family would sell assets to pay for counsel if the case were postponed.
