What happened
Nine publicly traded companies have objected to tokenized versions of their stock on OKXICE, the venue owned by NYSE parent Intercontinental Exchange and crypto exchange OKX, according to a public notice dated Oct. 15. The objectors are Broadcom, Verizon, CoreWeave, UnitedHealth Group, AppLovin, Applied Digital, Rocket Lab, Applied Optoelectronics and Cerebras Systems. Under SEC rules, the venue cannot offer tokenized versions of any of them.
The list grew with each revision. The first notice, dated Oct. 4, named 63 stocks the venue intended to offer and already recorded one objection, from Cerebras, which was not among the 63. An Oct. 8 revision added AppLovin, Applied Digital and Rocket Lab. The Oct. 15 version brought in the remaining five. Eight of the nine had been on the original roster.
The notice does not say why any company objected. Applied Optoelectronics reportedly told The Wall Street Journal it could not gauge what tokenization would do to its share price, liquidity and volatility, and saw no clear upside for the company or its shareholders. OKX had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
Why it matters
The objections test whether crypto platforms can build blockchain markets for public company shares without issuer cooperation. The venue's legal footing is an exemptive order the SEC issued Sept. 17, which runs five years and exempts venues like this one from exchange registration. When a third party has tokenized a company's stock, the company gets written notice first, and trading cannot begin for at least 30 calendar days. A written objection inside that window blocks trading, and the venue then has five business days to update its public notice.
Analysts framed the objections as a dispute over consent and pricing rather than a rejection of tokenization. Robin Nordnes, CEO of trading validation platform Raiku, told Cointelegraph that issuers are not objecting to the blockchain but to not knowing what happens to their price once it trades there. CoinShares senior research associate Luke Nolan said the objection does not amount to a rejection of tokenization generally, but mostly targets being tokenized without consent. Misha Putiatin, co-founder of collateral markets platform Symbiotic, told Cointelegraph that companies need to see upside and a track record of efficient pricing, and that more real-world data would help everyone assess the benefits and risks.
What the data shows
Per the notice, OKXICE will trade stocks through permissioned Uniswap v4 pools on X Layer, each denominated against USDC, USDG or USDT. Only wallets that pass identity and sanctions checks and hold a non-transferable token get in. No launch date is given.
More than $754 million in capital has moved onchain during the past 30 days, pushing the total across stablecoins and tokenized assets to $320 billion, according to OnchainBenchmark.
Background
ICE and OKX unveiled the joint venture in June, with former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as co-chair.
