Ripple's RLUSD earns Moody's A2 rating as XRP value capture question lingers
Moody's gave RLUSD an A2 long-term and P-1 short-term deposit rating, handing institutions a credit benchmark while leaving open how much XRP gains.
Key takeaways
- First of its kind. Ripple executive Jack McDonald said RLUSD is the first stablecoin to receive an investment-grade rating from Moody's, though the agency's public notice omits its full rationale.
- Credit, not a guarantee. The rating does not ensure redemption at par, prevent peg changes or mean banks have approved the token for use, and RLUSD is not an insured deposit.
- XRP link is indirect. RLUSD can settle without buyers acquiring XRP for the full payment value, and Ethereum transfers need no XRP, so stablecoin growth need not lift XRP demand proportionally.
What happened
Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin has been assigned an A2 long-term deposit rating and a Prime-1 short-term rating by Moody's, the top grade on the agency's short-term scale. Crypto.news and Cryptonews.com both reported the assessment, which was issued under Moody's framework for rating fiat-backed tokens and covers RLUSD issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple's New York-regulated subsidiary, on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum.
Ripple executive Jack McDonald said on October 28 that RLUSD is the first stablecoin to receive an investment-grade rating from Moody's. The agency's publicly accessible notice does not set out its full analytical reasoning. The announcement came during Ripple's Swell conference week, a period in which the company was also rolling out banking and custody partnerships.
According to the reports, RLUSD's reserves consist mainly of cash and short-dated U.S. government securities, with BNY as primary custodian and coverage of about 103% of tokens outstanding. BNY placed RLUSD's market capitalization near $2.5 billion. Separately, Ripple detailed on October 26 the activities approved for its national trust bank following final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, including managing segregated RLUSD reserves and institutional custody, and said on October 27 that BNY would add custody support for XRP and RLUSD while exploring tokenized trade finance.

Why it matters
A credit rating gives institutional risk teams a familiar way to judge an issuer's ability to meet obligations, which matters for treasuries, collateral and payment desks weighing a dollar token. Context is still needed: A2 is investment grade but not Moody's highest long-term grade, Aaa, while P-1 is the agency's top short-term category, and the two describe different repayment horizons. The rating does not guarantee redemption, stop the peg from moving or establish that banks have cleared RLUSD for use, and the public materials do not show how much of the reserve portfolio could be sold quickly during unusually heavy redemptions.
For XRP holders, the more consequential question is where the value lands. Every transaction on the XRP Ledger requires XRP for fees, and accounts must hold XRP to meet reserve requirements, but those needs are modest on their own. The larger opening would be XRP acting as a bridge asset in cross-currency payments. Yet RLUSD can settle directly without an institution buying XRP for the full payment value, and transfers on Ethereum require no XRP for gas, so a bigger stablecoin business need not generate proportional demand for the token.
What the data shows
The key figures in the reports: A2 long-term and P-1 short-term grades from Moody's; reserve coverage of roughly 103% of outstanding tokens; about $2.5 billion in circulating supply, as cited by BNY; and reserves held mostly in cash and short-dated U.S. Treasuries with BNY as primary custodian. The reports also note that no new RLUSD transaction volume, bank mandate or redemption activity has been disclosed as attributable to the rating, and that the accessible materials do not give a next review date.
Background
Moody's rating is not the same kind of measure as the stability scores published by S&P Global Ratings, which assess how reliably a token holds its reference value. S&P scored Circle's USDC at 2, or strong, in December 2025, and Tether's USDT at 5, or weak, in November 2025, citing reserve composition and transparency concerns. Those scores are not deposit ratings and cannot be compared directly with RLUSD's grades, and no public announcement reviewed in the reports shows Circle or Tether applying under Moody's methodology. Elsewhere, Standard Chartered began institutional RLUSD custody through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch on October 12, a collateral arrangement with LMAX Group still needs approvals and testing, and a Cross River Bank agreement covers integrating RLUSD into dollar transfer and round-the-clock settlement infrastructure.
Cryptonews.com drew a comparison with Binance's BUSD and BNB, where the stablecoin supplied dollar liquidity and BNB carried fee discounts and a burn mechanism. Ripple starts from a different position: RLUSD provides the dollar leg while XRP is the ledger's native asset and a potential bridge. The outlet noted that a tenfold rise in RLUSD's market cap would not imply a matching move in XRP, since the outcome depends on volumes, integrations and how many payments actually route through the token.
What to watch
What to watch next is whether Ripple discloses any change in RLUSD volumes, bank mandates or redemption behaviour following the rating, and whether the trust bank's reserve and custody roles move from approval into operation. Also relevant: whether the LMAX collateral arrangement clears its remaining approvals and testing, whether institutions begin using XRP as a bridge alongside RLUSD, and whether other issuers seek ratings under Moody's framework. None of these outcomes is established by the rating itself.
Questions readers ask
What rating did RLUSD receive?
Moody's assigned RLUSD an A2 long-term deposit rating and a Prime-1 short-term rating, the highest short-term grade, covering tokens issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum.
Does the rating mean RLUSD is risk-free?
No. A rating is a credit assessment, not a guarantee of redemption at par or protection against peg changes. RLUSD is not an insured bank deposit, and the public notice does not detail immediate liquidity under stress.
How does RLUSD growth affect XRP?
Indirectly. XRP is needed for XRP Ledger fees and account reserves and could serve as a cross-currency bridge, but RLUSD can settle without buyers holding XRP for the full amount, and Ethereum transfers need no XRP.
