Bitcoin BTC

Bitcoin is a payment network whose confirmed transactions are recorded in a shared public ledger. BTC is the asset transferred on that network. A wallet helps its user create addresses, inspect balances and sign transactions. The private key authorizes spending; an address is information that can be shared to receive a payment. Keeping those two roles separate matters when evaluating a wallet or a request to connect one.

Transactions are broadcast to the network before they become part of the blockchain. Mining groups transactions into blocks and uses proof of work to establish their order. Confirmation is therefore a process rather than an instant promise made by a payment screen. The blockchain provides a record that other participants can check instead of relying on a single company to maintain the balance sheet.

This profile separates the network from the products built around it. An exchange balance, a wallet interface and an on-chain transaction are different things.
